How can an officer gain a stronger sense of self, conquer negative thoughts and feelings, stop reinforcing self-deteriorating behavior, and improve mental self-control?
Officers will learn about the correlations between the brain and the mind, the mind and behavior, thinking processes and emotions, as well as mental health problems. They will gain an understanding of how the functions of the physical brain relate to mental mechanisms that drive thinking processes.
The course covers the following:
- Cognitive Errors and Thinking Traps
- Decision Making
- Repressed Memories and Framing
- Functional Fixedness, and Heuristics
- Perceptual Abilities and Shortcomings
- Implicit Bias
- Emotions and Personalities
- Ego, Self-Esteem, and Self-Identity
- Performance and Attention
The officers will learn to:
- Make sense of the complexity of their own self and develop a broader and deeper perspective of the world around them.
- Analyze their emotions, and the quality of their own thinking patterns.
- Utilize knowledge of neurological, biological, and psychological functions to identify thinking errors in themselves and others, and course correct them accordingly.
- Gain a better understanding of mental processes, applicable to law enforcement officers.
- Recognize mental obstacles that block an officer's ability to think clearly.
- Use bias-free measures to frame problems and identify solutions.
- Improve character; become mentally resilient and self-reliable.
- Increase their awareness of cognitive distortions and biases.
- Recognize thinking patterns and behaviors in themselves and others that indicate an increased risk of depression and suicide.
- Effectively transform the way they think, behave, and interact with others.
